The new offering, called YouTube TV, will compete with other services fighting to attract mobile-loving younger audiences who dropped pricier, traditional cable and satellite packages or never signed up in the first place.

YouTube TV will be distributed over the internet and launch in the coming months at a cost of $35 a month for six accounts, YouTube CEO Susan Wojcicki told reporters at an event in Los Angeles.

YouTube TV subscribers will be able to watch original programming appearing on YouTube Red, a subscription service that includes movies and shows starring popular YouTube video creators.

The development of the live TV package was an attempt to sell a new service to interested viewers of YouTube's free videos.

“Millennials love great TV content, but what we see is that they don't want to watch it in a traditional setting,” says Wojcicki.

YouTube TV will feature Walt Disney Co's ABC cable channels, CBS Corp's CBS, 20th Century Fox's Fox and Comcast Corp's NBC plus cable channels including ESPN, USA and FX.It will launch initially in the select U.NS.NS.market.

The product will compete with services like Dish Network Corp's Sling TV, AT&T's DirecTV Now and Sony Corp's PlayStation Vue.These packages sell for about $20 to $65 a month.Hulu is also developing a live TV service.

All direct digital services provide television networks with an avenue to make up for the loss of customers due to "cutting the cord", or the elimination of pay TV.Channel owners say they earn as much or more per subscriber on a direct digital service as they get through cable or satellite TV packages.

YouTube executives say they want to make the YouTube TV app easy to use on mobile devices, desktop computers, or Internet-connected TVs.Users will be able to record the show on the cloud DVR and watch it for up to nine months.Engineers are also incorporating technology from Google, such as the ability to voice search TV shows through the Google Home device.

"While we're in the golden age of content, the current age of TV hasn't done its fair share," said Neal Mohan, product manager at YouTube."We feel we're in a great position to innovate the way TV works."
