A pair of newborn twins died after getting Hepatitis B vaccination in the central Nghe An Province last Friday.
The three-day-old girls, each weighing three kilograms, underwent preliminary tests before being vaccinated by doctors of the Tay Bac General Hospital, a provincial public hospital.
A few hours after the vaccination, the twins began to show signs of abnormality. One died the same day, and the other died the next day.
Officials from the Nghe An Department of Health and doctors from the National Children's Hospital said on Wednesday that their cause of death was determined to be respiratory and circulatory failure due to a rare inborn metabolic disorder.
The hospital said 16 other children who received the same injection on the same day were fine.
Child deaths after vaccination are not unheard of in Vietnam. In January, a two-month-old baby in Hanoi died a day after receiving ComBE Five, a vaccine against diphtheria, pertussis, tetanus, hepatitis B and Haemophilus influenzae type B.It was later said that her death was due to anaphylaxis.
Doctors recommend that parents carefully monitor their children for at least 24 hours after vaccination to be on the lookout for possible side effects.
