A tropical depression has strengthened into the eighth storm off the eastern coast this year and is on course to move to southern Vietnam.

As of Saturday night, Toraji, as the storm has been internationally named, was spotted around 240 kilometers (149 miles) to the east of the coast of Ninh Thuan and Binh Thuan provinces in central Vietnam, with wind speeds of up to 75 kilometers per hour.

Over the next 24 hours, the storm is forecast to move west at 10 km/h and will be off the southern and central provinces from Ninh Thuan to Ba Ria-Vung Tau on Sunday afternoon, with strong winds. unchanged.

Weather stations had predicted that the storm would continue to move west after making landfall before weakening to a tropical depression the next day.

On Monday night, the tropical depression will move into the southern provinces, with winds of 50 kilometers per hour.

Therefore, heavy rain, gusty winds and rough seas can make landfall in the southern part of the East Sea, known internationally as the East Sea, including the waters of the Spratly archipelago.

Weather experts say the coastal provinces of South Central and South Central Highlands will receive up to 150 mm of heavy rain from Saturday night until Monday.

Le Dinh Quyet, meteorologist of the Center for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting for the Southern Region, said it is likely that Ba Ria-Vung Tau, about 90 km southeast of Ho Chi Minh City, will be directly affected. continuation of the tropical depression.

Evacuation

HCMC authorities are preparing to evacuate vulnerable residents to safety as the depression approaches.

Vice Chairman of the City People's Committee Le Thanh Liem has just directed functional agencies, especially Can Gio district, to grasp the situation and be ready to prevent all fishing boats and boats from going out to sea.

In December last year, city leaders ordered the mass evacuation of 5,000 residents in the coastal Can Gio district when Typhoon Tembin made landfall in southern Vietnam.

Vietnam suffered a record number of 16 tropical storms in 2017 leaving 389 people dead or missing and another 668 injured, mostly in the North and Central regions.

The General Statistics Office estimated the damage at about VND 60 trillion ($2.64 billion), 1.Five times the number of the previous year.
