"We have decided to part ways with Masahiro. He will return to Japan after handing over the job. Replacing him would be assistant manager Phung Thanh Phuong," a Saigon FC board member said Monday.
The sacking of Masahiro came after Saigon lost 0-3 to Nam Dinh FC despite playing at home Sunday. Throughout the past six rounds of V. League 2021, Saigon only won two games and lost four.
Masahiro is an experienced figure in Japanese football. However, after being appointed head manager at Saigon, he failed to prove his ability, with the club failing to capitalize under his command.
In its three games under Masahiro, the club lost 0-1 to HCMC FC, 0-1 to Becamex Binh Duong and 0-3 to Nam Dinh. Saigon fell to the 11th spot and may not make it to the top six after the first leg of the season ends.
Masahiro’s replacement, Phuong, would become head manager for the first time in his career. The former national team player has been assistant coach to several clubs before joining Saigon.
Phuong will have his first game as Saigon’s manager when the club plays V. League defending champions Viettel FC on April 3.
