Storm Noul, which made landfall in central Vietnam Friday morning before devolving into a tropical depression, has left one dead and 29 others injured.

The dead victim, whose identity has not been revealed, was crushed by a falling tree in Thua Thien-Hue Province’s Phong Dien District, according to the Central Steering Committee on Natural Disaster Prevention and Control.

At least 23 other people in the central province were injured, including two critically, as the storm tore off the roofs of more than 1,600 houses and toppled many roadside trees.

The local government said the province had been hit by heavy rains since Thursday, with rainfall measuring 150-250 mm in 24 hours.A daily level of 180 mm is considered heavy.

In Quang Binh province, at least six people were injured while a woman in nearby Quang Tri was swept away by strong currents and is missing.

In the ancient town of Hoi An, Quang Nam province, heavy rain flooded many streets and caused landslides on Cua Dai beach. The beach reopened in 2017 after being closed for three years due to severe erosion. The province's Cham island receives 260 mm of rainfall.

In Da Nang, torrential downpours with between 150 and 210 mm of rain since Thursday morning have caused massive flooding and inundation in many parts of the city.

The tropical depression is forecast to move westward at 25 km/h before weakening into a low pressure area over Central Laos late Friday.

Weather experts said the northern and central regions will receive up to 300 mm of rain a day in the coming days.

Noul is the fifth tropical storm to form this year over the East Sea, known internationally as the East Sea.The fourth particle, Higos, made landfall in China last month.

Meteorologists warn that the East Sea could see 11-13 storms and tropical depressions this year, half of which affect Vietnam.

Vietnam's long coastline makes Vietnam particularly vulnerable to devastating storms and floods.Natural disasters, mainly floods and landslides caused by storms, killed 132 people and injured another 207 in the country last year.
