It was set to reopen on July 5 after being closed on June 28 as part of efforts to curb the spread of the novel coronavirus in the city.
During the market’s temporary closure, HCMC has used a plot of land bordering the southern province of Tay Ninh for traders to take their goods there for disinfection and distribution, Nguyen Tien Dung, director of a local company in charge of managing the Hoc Mon wholesale market, told VnExpress Friday.
Covering an area of 100,000 square meters, the Hoc Mon wholesale market has 350 stalls, and some 4,000 people, mainly traders and laborers, work there. When open, it receives 3,500-4,000 pigs, nearly 2,000 tons of veggies and roots, and some 1,000 tons of fruits each day.
From April 27, when the fourth wave of Covid-19 hit Vietnam, to Friday noon, Vietnam recorded 14,505 Covid-19 cases in 51 out of 63 cities and provinces nationwide, including 4,573 cases in HCMC, according to the Health Ministry.
