Eight years ago, Tuing sped his motorbike along a dusty road. Waiting for him at his destination, an infant faced certain death.

Minutes before, Tuing was busy watering his coffee trees when Quy, his son, arrived home saying: "A child is going to die in Con Chieng because the patriarch forced the mother to kill it.Do you want to adopt the girl? We can pick her up."

Tuing immediately dropped his watering can, calling his wife and leaving without a moment’s thought.

From his place to Con Chieng commune, Mang Yang district, Gia Lai province, Central Highlands by car about 80 kNS.The couple was in such a hurry that they forgot to bring a basket to carry the newborn.

"I thought I had to quickly save the baby," recalls Tuing, 54.

When he reached the village of Clah in Con Chieng, Tuing waited at a friend's house to whom the grieving mother had brought the child.

Holding the baby, the woman explained that her husband had passed away after a seizure. The patriarch thought she was having an affair, so he believed that God had punished the man.

Another night, the village chief dreamed that the land was sinking, killing many villagers. He took it as a bad sign and decided to kill the baby.

With customs trumping the law, the mother could do little. On the night she gave birth, they took the child into the woods and abandoned her. Some hunters, hearing the girl's cry, returned the baby to her mother.

However, the patriarch still wanted the baby dead. This time, she was taken into the forest by her mother and the hunters had to rescue her again.

The elderly leader, conceding, said the family had to provide a cow if they wanted the child to live, which they could not afford at the time.

The mother decided to ask if there was any family in the village who wanted to adopt her child, but no one accepted.

The story of the poor mother found its ways to Tuing.

“God will bring her up.My husband and I will bring her back to the village to see her mother in the future," said Hyenh, 53-year-old Tuing's wife.

Holding their one-week-old daughter, with scratches on their hands, the couple brought their new daughter home.

Because the Ba Na people don't have a surname, Tuing named him Qua (English is "Pass"), meaning the baby from Con Chieng to his hometown in Dak Doa.

In the first week, Ms. Guo did not drink any milk, although her belly continued to swell. After examining her, the doctor discovered that she was suffering from worms.

Seeing that the child was too thin, Mr. Tuing sold the pig and bought "the best milk to help him grow better."

When there were no pigs to sell, he asked to pay with coffee beans.

When Qua was three, Ms. Tuing's daughter-in-law left, leaving a two-year-old and an eight-month-old child.Wake up at 5 a.NS.NS.Every day, the couple cooks, takes care of three children, and grows coffee.

Low-income families can hardly afford to take care of children. When Qua and another grandchild fell ill, Tuing's son had to take time off from farming to stay at home to take care of the children.

Since receiving the fruit, the family has only eaten rice with spicy salt.Fish are found only during the rainy season.Fruit often follows his father around the farm, catching crabs to dry before salting.

Tuing never regretted adopting Qua.

"God put her in my hands, so I bring her up," said Tuing, who even gave up alcohol and cigarettes to have enough money for childcare.

When Qua turned six, the primary school required her birth certificate for admission purposes.

"The day he came here to ask for Qua’s birth certificate, he was about to cry.Mr. Nguyen Van Tuan Anh, a local official said.

Tuing had to return to Clah village to ask for proof that he had adopted Qua.Both he and his wife are then required to undergo health checks and obtain a new marriage certificate to ensure they are officially eligible to become adoptive parents.

“It was my first blood test.I was so scared,” Tuing recalls.

After a year, Guo was finally accepted into the school. The couple never told Qua that she had been adopted.Last year, she started asking about rumors at school that she wasn't their biological daughter.

Hyenh was speechless. She pointed to her stomach and said in Ba Na dialect: "I give you."

The mother knows it is a matter of time until her daughter discovers the truth.

On a lunar December afternoon, her three children were standing in the yard, bathing. No shampoo, no shower gel. They used water from a well.

Around them, the basalt red soil of the beloved Central Highlands is the place to nurture love, expressed through the selfless actions of their parents.
