A pregnant elephant entered local farmland in southern Dong Nai Province to give birth Tuesday, leaving behind her placenta.
Residents of Thanh Son Commune, Dinh Quan District on Monday evening saw a herd of elephants entering a cashew farm 20 meters from the jungle.
At about 4 o'clock a.NS.Third, they heard the loud call of an elephant, presumably from the mother in labor.
While investigating, they saw a calf and its parents following the herd back into the jungle.
Residents found a 30-kilogram (66-pound) placenta on the farm along with signs of damage caused by elephants.
According to the Dong Nai Forest Protection Department, the new herd of elephants in Dong Nai has grown to about 19.
Vietnam had about 1,500-2,000 elephants in the wild in the 1990s but the number has dropped to 124-148 in 8/63 localities in the country.
Human encroachment on forests for many years has robbed them of their natural habitat and main source of food.
In recent years, elephants have been found on farmland throughout Dong Nai in search of food.
Dong Nai authorities have installed electric fences 50 km long to protect agricultural areas and plan to build another 20 km long.
