The film adaptation of a hit web drama directed by Vu Ngoc Dang stars comedian and TV host Tran Thanh. The web drama version released on YouTube in early 2020, is the most viewed in Vietnam with more than 90 million hits for 5 episodes.
The film tells the story of Sang, an elderly motorbike taxi driver living in a low-income neighborhood in downtown Saigon, who struggles to earn enough money to support his family.
It was scheduled to show in theaters in the country during the Lunar New Year holidays, but was postponed due to the recent Covid-19 outbreak.
Tran Thanh said: "Being loved by the audience means eternal happiness for me."
Movie experts said the drama would break several more records in future since it had only been shown nationwide for the past four days, following a week of sneak peaks.
"The Godfather" received mixed reviews, with some viewers finding the plot too predictable and disparaging the dialogue.
Thanh said he would make the film shorter if given the opportunity, because 128 minutes is quite long.
Last week, the drama set a record for box office collections at VND100 billion ($4.3 million views in 4 days after its release, beating the previous record of 6 days of "The Last Egg 3" (The Last Egg 3) in 2020, according to independent tracking company Box Office Vietnam.
