As part of efforts to digitize citizens’ information to simplify administrative procedures, Vietnam is providing personal ID numbers to newborns.

Duong Van Tam became a father not long ago.

Last week, he went to the headquarters of the People's Committee of Dich Vong Hau ward, Cau Giay district, Hanoi to make a birth certificate for his son.

He was surprised to see a 12-digit number in the certificate. He was then told that was his baby's personal identification number, and that each infant would have one.

It will be used for all kinds of administrative procedures as the child grows up and will be the number on their ID card when they are old enough to do the procedure.

So far, 56/63 provinces that have provided these numbers are 2.6 million babies, according to the Ministry of Public Security.

The remaining seven provinces still do not have a database connected to the national database, but this will be done next year, when the national population database is complete, said Mr. Hoang Loi, Director Director of the Center for maintaining the national database on Vietnamese population said .

National population database stores and manages basic information about all citizens. When completed in 2020, the Ministry of Justice and Public Security will ensure all babies have an ID number on their birth certificate.

Since 2016, the identity card has included a 12-digit identity card number. It used to be a nine-digit ID number before that.

The new numbers carry personal information and connect to national databases while the old numbers do not.

Identity cards are issued when people turn 14 years old.

With a population of 95 million people, Vietnam is gradually completing the national database of citizens.

The data digitization project is on the list of medium-term tasks to be completed between 2016 and 2020.

By April of this year, 86 percent had been completed.

Thanks to the new ID number, many administrative tasks become simpler and more convenient, saving time and costs.

People won't have to duplicate multiple times for about 1,300 different types of administrative work, saving about 1 dong.6 trillion ($69 million) a year.
