"Nha Cay" (The Tree House) directed by Truong Minh Quy has been chosen to compete in the Feature Film section. A collaborative effort by directors and producers from Singapore, Vietnam, Germany, France, and China, its narrative follows a filmmaker in Mars in 2045, combining nostalgic elements with futuristic details.
"Ngot, Man" (Sweet, Salty) by director Duong Dieu Linh, "Hay Thuc Tinh Va San Sang" (Stay Awake, Be Ready) by Pham Thien An, "Le Truong Thanh Cua Edison" (The Graduation of Edison) by Pham Hoang Minh Thy, and "Gallery" by Vo Anh Vu will compete in the Short Film category.
"Sweet, Salty" focuses on the bittersweet revelations of a 40-year-old pregnant woman looking for her husband’s lover. "Stay Awake, Be Ready" depicts the chaotic social scenes in a Saigon pub street. Edison’s Coming-of-Age Ceremony, a 23-minute film, will tells us about a world where everyone has a little green sprout on their head, while "Gallery" is a portrait of urban identities mingling with each other.
Three other Vietnamese films, "Một Khu Dat Tot" (Blessed Land) by Pham Ngoc Lan, "Hieu" by Richard Van and "Vuon Hoa Nha Anh Binh" (In Bloom) by Nguyen Duy Anh, will be screened in the Asian Vision section.
"Blessed Land" won Best Film award at the Vienna Shorts Festival, automatically qualifying for the Oscars in 2020.
The 20-minute movie allows the audience to feel the tensions and opposition between two different social class - the rich and the poor, two seemingly distant but intrinsically close worlds set on the ‘blessed land’.
The 30-year-old Singapore film festival is one of Southeast Asia's most prestigious. Ninety films from 40 countries are entered in this year’s event from November 21 to December 1.
